How to Pack Clothes for Moving & Other Hacks for Packing Clothing

Pack N Move

Would you believe that moving is third on the list of most stressful life events, right after death and divorce? Part of what makes moving so stressful is the number of tasks involved—tasks like packing up a closet full of clothes.

Packing clothes can be tiring, but it doesn’t have to be. Pack N Move® offers expert tips on how to pack clothes for moving. We will also share some helpful packing hacks.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Pack Clothes for Moving

Some people rush when packing clothes, resulting in wrinkled and musty clothes. Efficiently packing clothes requires preparation and planning.

What you will need:

  • Moving boxes
  • Moving labels
  • Wardrobe boxes
  • Suitcases and bags
  • Bubble wrap, vacuum bags, or garbage bags
  • Sealing tape in a tape dispenser

Pack N Move provides all the necessary moving materials, such as boxes, tape, packing peanuts, bubble wrap, paper pads, and more. Our team can bring these supplies when you call, or you can purchase them if you prefer to pack yourself.

Before You Pack Your Clothing …

1. Sort Your Clothes to Make Packing Easier

Sort clothing by type or time of year. Organize clothes for each person. Keep valuable or fragile items separate. Declutter by donating unwanted clothes. Read our donation guide for details. Sell fashionable clothes for extra cash. Call our movers to dispose of anything left.

2. Clean your Clothes Before and After Moving

Wash or dry-clean clothes before moving. Avoid opening a box of sweaty, possibly mildew clothing. Do the last load of laundry and wet towels the day before moving to ensure they are clean and dry before going in the truck.

3. Put Aside What You Will Wear for Moving Day and Pack all Others Early

Put aside what you will wear on moving day as well as enough socks, undergarments, cold-weather clothing, shoes, towels, and everything else you may need if your move will take a few days. Even for local moves, have a few changes of clothing just in case. Pack away everything else as early as a week before moving day.

How to Pack Clothes for Moving

During moving week, pack appropriately depending on distance and method of moving. Moving out of state is different from moving a few blocks to a new apartment building. If renting a truck, learn how to pack it efficiently. Consider hiring professional movers if unsure. Avoid costly damages to possessions.

1. Use Wardrobe Boxes to Pack Hanging Clothes

Hanging clothes can be easily packed by using wardrobe boxes. Wardrobe boxes have a hanging bar inside so you can keep your clothing on the hangers and put them in the box. This keeps your clothing wrinkle-free and makes moving to your new closet easy.

2. Pack Folded Clothes in Suitcases and Cardboard Boxes

Your folded clothes can go into moving boxes. Use only small to medium-sized boxes because clothing can be heavy. When packing, make sure to pack everything tightly using one of these methods:

  • Flat fold — this is the traditional way of folding along the item’s natural contours. Pack every item individually and be sure to pack them tightly into the box to save space
  • Military roll — the roll is the most economical and popular way of packing for moving. It helps to maximize space and minimizes wrinkling during moving.
  • The KonMari Method — Marie Kondo has revolutionized packing and tidying. Watch how she does it in this video

Line the cardboard boxes with packing paper to keep fibers off your clothes. Secure each box with packing tape and label the contents for easy unpacking.

3. Use Your Sheets or Plastic Wrap

Sheets are good for packing. Layer folded clothes on the sheet, tie it up, and cover it with a garbage bag. Useful for bulky items like jackets and towels. Sheets can also protect clothes in drawers or secure hanging clothes in wardrobe boxes.

4. Leave Clothing in Drawers

If you are lacking in boxes and are relocating on your own, it is possible to store socks, underwear, and other garments in the drawers. This method is most suitable for shorter distances. Simply remove the drawers, transport them along with the clothing, and reposition them in the truck.
